They'll give up track position with a few laps to the end during safety cars. The AI will pit laps before it starts raining, for slicks. Safety cars and rain would be interesting if the AI wasn't terrible at dealing with the decisions. Practice I get the setup to 99%, without fail, then qualifying I send out my drivers at the highest grip with the fastest tires, then the race I optimize my pitstop strategy, which is only ever as complex as "Do we 1 stop or 2 stop", and then all you do is wait and see the result.
